This Week At Unity

This week, 10/22/2017 Rev. Art Suggs returns as our speaker!  Rev. Suggs would like to share some thoughts he has regarding not being fooled by the illusion of the duality all about us, and how to get past that for a glimpse of ultimate reality.  Come find out what really is going on when we see or hear something!  Our congregation always loves the discussions that Rev. Suggs brings forth with his lessons, so join us!

Prosperity Affirmation:

Affirm with us:  God is our supply.  Unity in the Southern Tier accepts God’s abundance and we are prospered.

The Healers of the Family Tree (and the Power of Blessing) with Jamie Walters

We’re coming into the week of All Hallow’s and All Souls, when our ancestors of many cultures expressed gratitude for blessings * and * sent prayers of blessing and healing down their ancestral lines.

For this Sunday, we’ll stir the power of blessing to contribute to healing in these times as well as to the dis-ease in the family tree.

You’re invited to bring along one spiritual altar item to symbolize your own family tree and your prayers for times past and now – we’ll place it on a table to receive the blessings stirred by our service together.

For more information about Jamie Walters you can check out her website!  (This format doesn’t allow me to link website addresses in bulk emails so I’m going to type the word “dot” in her website address when it should be just a . when you type it in…all one phrase no spaces.)

**Sunday, November 5**

We are very excited that on Sunday, November 5, 2017 we will be welcoming back Cybie Mauro from Unity of Syracuse! Stay tuned for her lesson topic and a bio for those of you who aren’t familiar with her.   You don’t want to miss this service!

Upcoming Workshops:

Saturday, 10/28/17 from 1:00-3:30  Donna Russin presents “Archangel Michael Codes Class” in the Eden Room at the First Congregational Church, 30 Main St. Binghamton.

This class explores how to work with Archangel Michael for protection, cutting cords and also a short meditation followed by Codes by Tom Kenyon.  The codes are sacred sound channeled by Tom Kenyon who heals with sacred sound. The codes can transform and heal if you are ready.

The cost of the class is $20 per person (½ of cost to be donated to Unity of the Southern Tier).

CONTACT: Donna Russin, RN, Angel Therapy Practitioner certified by Doreen Virtue at (607)644-3609 or email donnarussin@yahoo.com to reserve your spot.

Saturday, 11/18/17 from 1:00-2:30  Jeff Gregory presents “Wellness and the Power of Sound and Light” in the Eden room at FCC, 30 Main St. Binghamton.
We will be exploring the use of sound and light for healing and reducing stress and pain. They can also take you into meditation quickly and easily.  There are medical studies to support this, but we will be checking this using dowsing tools, and kinesiology.  We will be showing you how to check chakras and the person’s energy field. This will be a highly interactive talk. Starting out using the tuning forks, then to the hand held singing crystal bowls, crystal singing pyramids, PandoraStar light demo and finishing out with a 15 Minute sound healing session using a large gong. If you would like to lie down during the gong session, please bring something to lie on. This is normally very relaxing.

The cost of the class is $20.00 per person.  You do not have to pre-register. Questions? Contact Jeff Gregory at pyramidwellness@gmail.com or Rebecca at UnityintheSouthernTier@gmail.com.

Sunday School News

We still are looking for Sunday school teachers. Over the summer, Rev. Sickler and Clifford worked on assembling a curriculum and materials needed to teach each class.  All you will have to do is present it to the children and have fun!  Our children are young so you will be doing fun and motivating craft & play activities while teaching the basic lesson for the week.  Sign up at services to teach a lesson periodically-this doesn’t have to be a full-time volunteer job! There is a sign up sheet in the front of the Eden room located on top of the storage cabinet with the lessons inside.

We could use donations of materials needed for class such as paper, construction paper, glue, glue sticks, glitter, crayons, etc.  If you’d like to contribute, please bring your donations to Sunday services.

If you are interested or know someone who might be interested in this position, or signing up to teach even a single Sunday, please contact Jerry Neary at jnedry1953@gmail.com or 570-396-4398.

The 5 Basic Principles of Unity Teachings

Unity encourages you to explore and apply Unity teachings based on your own spiritual understanding. We believe this spiritual understanding is enhanced through reflective prayer and meditation. The five basic ideas that make up the Unity belief system are: 1) God is the source and creator of all. There is no other enduring power. God is good and present everywhere. 2) We are spiritual beings, created in God’s image. The spirit of God lives within each person; therefore, all people are inherently good. 3) We create our life experiences through our way of thinking. 4) There is power in affirmative prayer, which we believe increases our connection to God. 5) Knowledge of these spiritual principles is not enough. We must live them.

Do You Know About the 12 Powers?

The Twelve Powers are core abilities within each of us that we are using whether we know it or not. We consciously use them to handle every life situation so we can be the best we can be. Each of our Twelve Powers has a focused use and purpose, and we use them together, in concert, to master the art of living. They are faith, strength, wisdom, love, power, imagination, understanding, will, order, zeal, elimination, and life.- Rev. Kelly Isola

What is Affirmative Prayer?  (from unity.org)

When most people think of prayer, they think of asking God for something.

Not so in Unity.

Unity uses “affirmative prayer.” Rather than begging or beseeching God, this method involves connecting with the spirit of God within and asserting positive beliefs about the desired outcome. Affirmative prayer is the same method of prayer Jesus taught when he said, “So I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours” (Mark 11:24).

If, for example, one were to pray traditionally, one might say: “Please God, help me find a job.” By contrast, an affirmative prayer might be: “I am now guided to my right and perfect employment.”

Affirmative prayer reflects the certainty that we are each being led to our highest good, despite any temporary appearances.

Metaphysicians believe that thoughts transmit magnetic energy and this energy attracts other energy of the same frequency. Whether you are conscious of it or not, your thoughts are transmitting energy that is attracting more of the same. When you remain focused on your intentions, you will draw those things into your life.

Rosemary Ellen Guiley, author of Prayer Works, states that affirmative prayer “sets into motion the forces that enable us to manifest what we pray for.”

She adds, “Prayer is ineffective when it is accompanied or followed by negative thinking, or the endless repeating of affirmations. We have to put power and intensity into our thought, change our thought, and believe in the guidance we are receiving. If we spend energy on negative beliefs and feelings, we will get negative results, even if we and others pray daily for us. For example, if you pray for a job and then complain to others that you have no job or can’t find one, you are undermining your prayer.”

By using an affirmative prayer approach, we can visualize and plan for the future with faith that the power of God is continually blessing our lives with unlimited possibilities. Affirmative prayer leads to an awakening of our spiritual selves. In faith, we pray giving thanks in advance that the Universe is meeting our every need.

Our Unity Prayer Request Box

We encourage you to make a list of all of your prayer concerns for both yourself and others, and to put it in the prayer request box either before or after the service on Sundays.  Prayer requests will be sent on to Silent Unity where they will also be prayed about every day for 30 days.

Feel free to bring a new prayer list every Sunday.

This Week At Unity

With only one more week until Christmas, Rev. Diane Sickler’s message this Sunday is entitled “So Much To Give”.  Let us reflect on the act of giving and what it is that we have to share this Christmas.

During this Sunday, and the next two after that, our own Rev. Diane McCarty and i will be doing some duets for the special music. As such, the kids will not go upstairs for the Sunday School until after that. In the Sunday School class we will be talking about a ritual process shared by every Native American tribe on this continent as well as many other parts of the world, and sharing how each of us can do this for the greater good of all of the earth. The “Message worth Reading” below speaks somewhat to the value of this ritual.

Following the service this week we will have our monthly potluck dinner, and everyone is invited whether you have something to share or not, and there has always been enough. Considering the holiday season, we can expect some wonderful holiday treats so come and share the joy.

After the potluck our Unity board will be meeting, and these meetings are always filled with humor, wit, beauty and wisdom so feel free to stay and enjoy the process. And, also tell them what you you like, and the things that you would like to see changed. If we do not communicate with our board then they cannot represent us properly.

There are a couple of openings on the board if anyone is interested in serving in than way. We also need someone to take over the newsletter as of the 1st of January, and a new Sunday School teacher as of the 1st of June. If anyone is interested in helping with these positions then talk with Jerry Neary.

Our Unity Prayer Request Box

We encourage you to make a list of all of your prayer concerns for both yourself and others, and to put it in the prayer request box either before or after the service on Sundays. Then, our Prayer Chaplain, Rev. Diane McCarty, will pray concerning them each day, and will send them on to Silent Unity where they will also be prayed about every day for 30 days.

Feel free to bring a new prayer list every Sunday.

Your Tithes and Offerings at Work

During our last board meeting we voted to split our church tithe between Unity Worldwide Ministries, and the ministry headed by Rev. Art Suggs to help the financially impoverished families in the area around the First Congregational Church. Rev. Art does this is such a way that it is not seen so much a handout as something they feel they have earned, and that builds their self-esteem in the process, so this is a program that helps our collective local community, and that we want to support in this way.

From time to time – due to what is going on in the world – we may choose to support other things as well, and we shall endeavor to keep you informed as to how your tithes and offerings are being used.

We are Developing a New Mission Statement!

In a workshop led by Rev. Diane Sickler the participants from our congregation explored such questions as “Why does Unity in the Southern Tier exist in my life?”, “What does Unity in the Southern Tier stand for?” and “Who have I come here to be?”. Then we worked through the various lists that were developed, and we came to the point of determining this:

“The purpose of Unity in the Southern Tier is to provide a spiritual community that expresses Unity Principles and Universal Spiritual Law in an atmosphere of loving acceptance, healing, joy, gratitude and self-discovery.”

As we continue to explore our purpose and develop our mission statement then we shall keep you informed of when and where we will be meeting so that each of you can come and participate in this process.

A Message Worth Reading

“From childhood, we begin hiding our inner self away. We learn to adapt and survive in the outside world. Our families and peers teach us socially acceptable behavior. Our educational system teaches us the technical and social skills we need to sustain a material life. As adults, we are thrust into a society geared towards materialism and maintaining the status quo.

Rarely, especially in the early formative years, are we taught inner development; with an emphasis on intuition, the subconscious mind, independent thinking, self esteem, self-confidence, psychic or inner spiritual growth.

Interesting Image

Is it any wonder the Inner Self becomes lost in the business of the outer world?

Yet, despite all this, the inner self does remain alive in everyone and many are ready to heed its call. That is why the mystical traditions exist today and have for centuries, offering people a way to realize their own infinitely powerful and divine nature.

Mysticism teaches cosmic laws and principles by which we are brought into closer consciousness of our divine power. The mystical experience of union with the One imposes upon the mystic a moral obligation — to use this knowledge for the welfare of others.” Rosicrucian Manuscript

This is also why the Unity Movement is in the world today.

Become a Licensed Unity Teacher!

Did you know that you can get credit for courses from Unity toward becoming a Licensed Unity Teacher or Unity Minister through the classes taught by Rev. Diane Sickler following the service on the first Sunday of every month.  Our youngest Board member, Kenneth Main, is one of the ones taking the class for credit so be certain to ask him about how this works.

Reminders:

Our Prayer Chaplain, Rev. Diane McCarty, is available every Sunday after the service to pray with you. We also invite you to place a prayer request in our Prayer Box where it will be prayed over by our Prayer Chaplain and then forwarded to Silent Unity. Your request will be included in prayer 24 hours a day for 30 days. You may also contact Rev. McCarty for prayer or information about Unity In The Southern Tier by calling: (918) 520-5426. Her email address is dianesmelody@yahoo.com.

Youth and Family Ministries

Unity in the Southern Tier is now offering children and youth programs each and every week. Our young friends will join us for the opening hymn and greeting, after which they will be led to their classroom for their lesson. We are truly excited to finally be able to offer this programming as part of our new and expanding ministry. We hope you will pass this on to any of your friends or family that have not been able to attend Unity services because of child care issues. This is our opportunity to reach out into the community and serve all who wish to come. Thank you all for your patience as we worked on making this dream become a reality.

This Week At Unity

This coming Sunday is February26, 2017.  Rev. Art Suggs will be speaking to us with another of his inspiring & thought provoking talks.  In case you don’t know Rev. Suggs, he is the senior minister at the First Congregational Church.  Their website describes him as enjoying being the pastor of an open-minded, intellectually curious, passionately loving and open and affirming congregation.  He relishes leading discussions about theological and interfaith matters.  Our Unity congregation always enjoys his talks and the ensuing discussions.  Come on over this Sunday and see what he’s presenting to us this time!

From now through the 1st of June Clifford will be teaching a Unity catechism for our children. This will not be about a rigid doctrine that one must follow no matter what, but a look at what Unity teaches about these subjects, and how we can decide for ourselves what we really believe. This coming Sunday will cover how Unity sees God. The lessons that follow this are Jesus Christ, Humankind, Prayer, Worship, Baptism, Communion, Heaven, Hell, Satan, Sin, and Life After Death. Parents and Grandparents are encouraged to get the Unity book titled “Alternatives: New Approaches to Traditional Christian Beliefs” by William L. Fischer so that you can help your children further with this during the weeks to come. You can order the book from Amazon.  ( editor’s note: Gmail wouldn’t allow us to send the amazon link in the mass email…sorry!)

We still are looking for a new Sunday school teacher beginning June 1st, when Clifford plans to retire from the position.  If you are interested or know someone who might be interested in this position, please contact Jerry Neary at jnedry1953@gmail.com or 570-396-4398.

Why do people join the Unity Board of Directors?

There are lots of reasons:

*“I totally believe in the Unity message – Christ within – and the Unity family is a source of friends and people to hang out with. I’m not drawn to other church settings.”

*“I was new to the area and wanted to connect with like-minded people, and make a contribution.”

*“It’s a spiritual practice for me. Service work is suggested as part of my 12 step program, and this enhances my connection to the greater whole.”

*“I’ve shopped around for churches; none of them expressed how I feel the way Unity does — I don’t want Unity to go away, so I need to help. I’m willing to. And my commitment helps me stay connected.”

The current Board is a warm and wonderful group of people who have fun together and get things done. We have openings for a few more Board members starting in January. Thoughtful, creative people who care about Unity are welcome.

Are you called?  Open to explore?

Please contact Unity Board President Jerry Neary at jnedry1953@gmail.com or 570-396-4398

or Vice President Pamela Moss at pamela@drpamelamoss.com or 607-372-1676.

Is this YOU?

Unity of the Southern Tier is looking for someone who:

* likes to focus on details

* enjoys numbers

* is organized and honest

* cares about Unity and wants it to thrive

* wants to feel useful, appreciated, loved and truly supported

The right person may be an introvert and not feel like a “joiner” — no problem.

To find out more, please contact Unity Board President Jerry Neary at jnedry1953@gmail.com or 570-396-4398

or Vice President Pamela Moss at pamela@drpamelamoss.com or 607-372-1676
